Energy Sources: Weekly Digest, September 24-30

Event of the week: International Conference "Biomass Energy 2018" was held

Right away two events highlighting the future of bioenergy in Ukraine took place last week in Kyiv.

More than 200 guests attended the International Conference "Biomass Energy". Speakers noted a significant increase in heat production from biomass. In three years, from 2014 to 2017 more than 460 million euros were invested in 2000 MW of new capacity in this area. Despite significant legislative changes, bioenergy development still needs to be supported. In particular, an increase in tariffs for electricity generation and the creation of a competitive biofuel market.

Also, last week, there was held a meeting of engaged market participants and government officials on the issues of discussing opportunities for energy from agricultural waste. The thematic seminar was organized by the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Kyiv, the consortium "Biobased Energy Ukraine" and the Bioenergy Association of Ukraine.

Participants of the seminar noted that Ukraine is a modern agricultural country. There is an opportunity to use about 34 million tons of agricultural waste each year for energy production. This will replace more than 9 billion cubic meters of gas per year.
